Surah Maryam starts with Zakariyah goes on to speak about Yayha then Maryam then Isa then Ibrhaim and Ismail and Idris and Ishaq and Yacoub and all throughout the Surah every time these messengers and prophets are mentioned it is emphasising that they preached/taught oneness of Allah, Salat and Zakat, being good to ones parents.

What does that link to? This man that this message is being revealed to needs not just to be accepted by the Christians and the Mushrikoon but needs to be universally accepted, like the message of Ibrahim. So Allah is not just connecting the message but making it universal. The Mushrikoon hold Ibrahim in very high regard and feel a sense of affiliation to him. It has a beautiful layout, the beginning talks about the Christians it ends by addressing the Mushrikoon, but the consistency is found in the middle. The beginning of the surah is an obvious address to the Christians, the middle talks of Ibrahim and the end addresses the people committing shirk in Makkah. The end of the Surah is a stark message to the Mushrikoon – the idol worshippers in Makkah. The middle of Surah talk at length of Prophet Ibrahim and mentions some other Prophets. It then go on to talk of the birth of Isa. They wanted children but his wife consistently was unable to conceive children. Some say 70’s, 80’s, others even say they were past 100. What was miraculous about that was that Zakariyah and his wife were at a very advanced age. The first talks of Zakariyah and the miraculous birth of Yayha. You can basically split the Surah in 3 section. There is a great consistency found in Surah Maryam. Not only is the Quran miraculous, the time of it’s revelation is equally as miraculous. This tells us something very interesting, that the Quran is the ultimate provision for people in all situations and circumstances. The scholars say one of the objectives of the revelation of Surah Maryam, was that this was revealed as a parting gift and as provision for the Muslims who were migrating to Abbasyinah which was a Christian land.

This occurs sometime in the 5th or 6th into Prophethood. The King tells the Makkans to take their gifts and leave as they were trouble-makers, and the Muslims were told to live there freely, and if anyone bothered them to let him know as he would protect the Muslims. The King after hearing these verses began crying profusely, and said that ‘these are the most beautiful words I have ever heard and everything it says about Isa is true’. So Jaffer then began reciting the ayats of Surah Maryam to the King. Jaffer (Brother of Imam Ali) was leader of the Muslims living there and was appointed to speak to the King.

The King asked the Muslims what they thought of Isa ibn Maraym. So the Makkans then said that the Muslims had a negative view about Christianity. They then sent some Makkans to Abbasiniyah with gifts for the King who told the King the Muslims were criminals and so he should order them back to Makkah, the King refused. When the leaders of Quraish in Makkah heard they were leaving, they tried but weren’t able to catch them. They lived there peacefully and were practising, and other Muslim joined them. The Prophet said there is a very kind King in Abbasiniyah who was a Christian King, go there and hopefully they will let you live there peacefully. Some Muslims came to the Prophet, and asked when will the help of Allah arrive. In the eyes of society at that time the Muslims were slaves and they were poor. This Surah was revealed immediately before the migration to Abbasiniyah (Eastern Africa) of some Muslims.Ībout the 4th year after Prophethood the message went public, before it had been private – between family and friends.
